Evaluating Erosion, Sediment, & Sedimentation on Construction Sites

At Forester University, our live webinars present you with the sediment and erosion control experts, who share best management practices, informative project case studies, and real-world applications. Join our faculty of industry experts in our live webinar (or series of webinars) exploring the technological innovations, project site applications, and any associated regulatory requirements in a comprehensive discussion of this topic. Please see below for a full description and registration information for this event.

Evaluating Erosion, Sediment, & Sedimentation on Construction Sites
April 22, 2015; 11:00 am – 12:30 pm
Module 1 of the Sediment & Erosion Control Master Class Series

Go beyond the basics! Join Jerald S. Fifield, Ph.D., PH, CPESC, CISEC and Tina R. Wills, PE, CISEC, CPESC for the first installment of our advanced Sediment and Erosion Control for Construction Sites Master Class Series, Evaluating Erosion, Sediment, and Sedimentation on Construction Sites, exploring the differences between erosion, sediment, and sedimentation and developing an understanding of these variables allowing for the quantification of erosion rates and sediment yield on construction sites.

Erosion is the result of the combined effects of storm events, soil properties, topographic features, available cover, and land management practices, which results in the discharge of sediment. In order to minimize the discharge of sediment on construction sites, we must first understand the erosion process.

Working through Fifield’s best-selling Designing and Reviewing Effective Sediment and Erosion Control Plans (3rded.), this first module of our Sediment and Erosion Control for Construction Sites Master Class provides information to develop an understanding of these variables that allows for the quantification of erosion rates and sediment yield on a construction site. In addition, this first module provides the underpinning of material needed to fully understand the remaining modules about sediment containment systems, barriers, erosion control, and assessing sediment and erosion control plans.

Fifield and Wills provide comparisons to demonstrate the difference between erosion rates determined by the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE and RUSLE2), as well as present mechanics of sediment yield using the sediment delivery ratio and the Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation (MUSLE). Lastly, Fifield and Wills complete a sediment yield to runoff volume comparison providing participants with an understanding how the volume of sediment in runoff waters vary and impact commonly found BMPs on construction sites.

Learning Objectives
Attendees can expect the discussion and education of the following learning objectives.

  • Understanding of the differences between erosion, sediment, and sedimentation.
  • Identify the limitations of erosion rate and sediment yield models.
  • Gain an introductory understanding of the concept of a “sedigraph”.
  • Understand sediment vs. runoff volumes.

Sediment and Erosion Control for Construction Sites Master Class Series
This Evaluating Erosion, Sediment, & Sedimentation on Construction Sites presentation is the first module in our Sediment and Erosion Control for Construction Sites Master Class Series. Currently, we are offering the full Master Class Series and manual at a discounted rate. If you are interested in purchasing the full Master Class Series, you can find information and the registration link here.

Sediment and Erosion Control for Construction Sites Master Class Manual
This presentation is based upon and works through the associated chapters in Jerald S. Fifield’s Designing and Reviewing Effective Sediment and Erosion Control Plans (3rded.), and is presented as an intermediate to advanced exploration of erosion, sediment, and sedimentation. As such, we recommend purchasing the manual Designing and Reviewing Effective Sediment and Erosion Control Plans (3rd ed.) with the presentation.

All sessions and workshops are presented live and on-demand so you may attend at your leisure, and are accompanied by a quiz to test your skills. Learning on your own at home online, or with a group, Forester University’s Master Class Series is designed as an interactive experience with the leading experts in the field.
