SFWMD oyster monitoring in St. Lucie Estuary provides evidence of
Everglades restoration progress
Stuart,
FL –
Improved water conditions for aquatic species throughout South Florida’s
estuaries can be confirmed when local oyster populations are thriving. That’s
because oysters are one of several important “indicator species” that tell
scientists how the ecosystem is doing.
Oyster monitoring by the
South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) is designed to identify changes
in oyster distribution and abundance in estuarine ecosystems along our Atlantic
and Gulf of Mexico coasts. As part of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration
Plan, the SFWMD supports an active monitoring and assessment program for
oysters, and a number of other species, throughout the region.
To
demonstrate the oyster monitoring process, which is done by boat, members of the
media are invited to participate in the June 10th sampling in the St.
Lucie Estuary.
